Seventh-day Adventists & Health
A 160-year tradition of wholistic health and leadership in lifestyle medicine
A Heritage of Health
Seventh-day Adventists are a worldwide Protestant Christian denomination that emphasizes health as part of their faith practice.
Seventh-day Adventists in Loma Linda, California were identified by National Geographic as one of the world's five Blue Zones -- communities where people live measurably longer, healthier lives. Adventist health principles -- emphasizing plant-based nutrition, regular exercise, rest, temperance, and community -- have been validated by decades of peer-reviewed research.
The Adventist Health Studies
The Adventist Health Studies, conducted by Loma Linda University, are among the largest and longest-running studies on the relationship between lifestyle and health. Research shows that Adventists who follow health principles live 7-10 years longer than the average population.
Leaders in lifestyle medicine
Seventh-day Adventist founders and doctors were some of the earliest pioneers of natural and lifestyle health in 1800's America. Inspired by this heritage, Adventist doctors, particularly those based in Loma Linda University Health, helped launch and lead the modern lifestyle medicine movement, including the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.
